Uznanie specyfiki bytu ludzkiego zostaje w niej dowiedzione przez odniesienie go do struktury kosmosu, której część stanowi człowiek.

The main goal of the article is to attempt a holistic analysis of the phenomenon of human solitude in the perspective of a paradigm of human studies, developed by ancient philosophy, which recognized the specific human nature as proven by referring it to the structure of the cosmos, whose part is man. To begin with, the author accepts two assumptions: that loneliness is a phenomenon recognized by reason and it shall be examined from the position of ratio and an assumption that the sense of loneliness is subject to the primary sense of belonging, which appears in two variants: (1) belonging to the structure of reality – „being in something” and (2) belonging to another man – „being with someone”. Therefore, loneliness is the sense of the lack of „being in something” or the sense of the lack of „being with someone”. Contrary to the primary intuition, animal rationale appears distinct from other related species in terms of the sense of loneliness type (1), since only men are aware of their place in the structure of the cosmos. This type of loneliness (understood as maladjustment to the structure of reality) is discussed further in the article. Three variants are distinguished here: (I) the loneliness of an element not adjusted to the structure of reality (a random element), (II) the loneliness of an element malfunctioning or inactive, (III) the loneliness of an element highlighted in comparison to the structure (a special element). The last variant was described with the use of three figures: a philosopher (cognitive solitude), a ruler (solitude of responsibility), an artist (solitude of a genius). In the last part of the article, the author shows how based on the assumption that the sense of loneliness is determined by the primary sense of belonging, two concepts of loneliness can be distinguished within the paradigm of ancient philosophy. The first concept expresses loneliness as a supernatural state for man, the
state of belonging to God, while the second – presents loneliness as punishment imposed on man for misdeeds. In both cases, we can see that the concept of man’s social nature enforces the presentation of the problem of solitude as an unnatural human condition. On the other hand, the same social nature allows to pose the problem of solitude, since the condition of solitude is the lack of feeling the sense of belonging. Therefore, loneliness is a disorder of the proper relation to reality, essentially caused by the hybris – the pride of reason.
